Freezing Strawberries

Strawberries are an excellent flavor of fruit to enjoy year round. Unfortunately, we cannot grow a year-round supply at Jaemor Farms. Our strawberries are only available April-June. However — there IS a way for you to ensure that you have a nutritious and delicious supply of these homegrown strawberries year round — FREEZE THEM. Enjoy a taste of spring in the chilly winter months by pulling a handful of strawberries out of your freezer!

Below are the steps recommended in freezing any strawberry or soft fruit, such as blackberries, raspberries, cranberries, and blueberries.

This method is called Dry Freezing. If berries already show signs of deteriorating, it is best that you toss those away or donate to your compost pile. If a berry can be washed without breaking the skin than this berry can be dry frozen. Frozen berries are best used later on in smoothies, ice cream, syrups, jams, preserves, pies and other recipes calling for strawberries. When dry freezing DO NOT wash the strawberries, or any other ‘soft skin’ berry before freezing.

Instructions:
  1. For very soft berries (like strawberries) don’t wash before freezing.
  2. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and spread the fruit out evenly. Place in the freezer until fruits are frozen.
  3. Once frozen, transfer the fruits to an airtight container or bag, ensuring all air is removed. Then return to the freezer. The fruits should keep well for around six months.
  4. Label the bags/containers with the date so you know when to use by.
